French property giant Unibail-Rodamco’s Chief Financial Officer, Jaap Tonckens, will be the headline speaker at the SA REIT Conference 2018, taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton Central, Johannesburg, next month.
Unibail-Rodamco is the largest commercial real estate company in Europe. It is set to become the world’s biggest international retail property owner, following the recent announcement of its record-breaking USD16 billion deal to buy Westfields. Tonckens, who is responsible for overseeing the investments of Unibail-Rodamco, will explore the latest REIT (real estate investment trust) trends and investor sentiments with specific insight into Western Europe at the SA REIT Conference.
The influential biennial gathering, hosted by the SA REIT Association for the third time, is sponsored by Nedbank CIB. It is scheduled for Thursday, 15 March 2018, and is expected to attract the majority of CEO’s of SA listed REITS, together with other senior executives, deal-makers, analysts, institutional investors, corporate sponsors, advisors, and industry professionals in the property sector.
Robin Lockhart-Ross, Managing Executive of Property Finance at Nedbank CIB, comments: “Nedbank’s involvement in the SA REIT Conference dates back to its inception, following the introduction of the REIT structure. As a sponsor of the SA REIT Association and financier to many of its members, we are fully supportive of the objectives of the Association to advance good governance, reporting and transformation in the industry.”
Lockhart-Ross adds: “These initiatives have enabled the internationalisation of the SA listed property sector, which has been nothing short of spectacular. This is evidenced in the number of pure play internationally listed companies that now account for close to 40% of the entire market capitalisation of the listed sector.”
According to the SA REIT Association, as more South African property companies invest internationally in response to poor local conditions and investor preferences, both local and global industry insights have become crucial for local players. It said the conference will feature trending topics and compelling conversations, in both the local and global context. The event will also arm delegates with essential perspectives on immediate and future influences, opportunities, challenges and innovations.
Other notable speakers set for the conference include, Jabu Mabuza, Chairman of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA) and newly appointed Eskom Chairman; Marc Wainer, Executive Chairman of Redefine Properties; Photy Tzellios, Supply Chain Director at Shoprite Checkers; Gareth Allison, Executive Director & Head of sub-Saharan Africa at MSCI; Mark Randall of the JSE; Izak Petersen, Chairman of the SA REIT Association and CEO of Dipula Income Fund; and, Mark Stevens, Chairman of the SA REIT Association’s Marketing Committee and CEO of Fortress Income Fund, amongst others.
Transformation in the property industry will also be under the spotlight at the event. Dr Sedise Moseneke, Chairman of the SA REIT Property Sector Charter Committee, will lead a session on the conference programme with input from Portia Tau Seketi of the Property Charter Council. There will also be a REIT tax update from Bram Goossens, Chief Financial Officer at Equites Property Fund.
